Moving From a House to an Apartment: What to Plan Before Moving Day

House to apartment

Moving from a house to an apartment takes more planning than deciding which furniture to bring. You may also need to reserve an elevator, arrange truck parking, work around building hours, and figure out how a large couch will get through a shared hallway.

Handling those details ahead of time helps your movers arrive prepared and gives you fewer things to sort out while the truck is being unloaded.

If you are moving into an apartment in Ann Arbor, Saline, Adrian, Tecumseh, or a nearby Southeast Michigan community, here is what to check before moving day.

1. Ask the Property Manager About Move-In Requirements

Before finalizing your moving arrangements, ask the property manager how move-ins work at the building.

Useful questions include:

  • Are moves allowed only during certain hours?

  • Do I need to reserve an elevator?

  • Is there a designated loading area?

  • Which entrance should the movers use?

  • Does the building require documentation from the moving company?

  • Are there requirements for protecting floors or elevators?

Requirements vary by property. A building with an elevator may still require a reservation before movers can use it.

Share any written instructions with your moving company ahead of time. If the property needs insurance documentation, allow time for that to be coordinated.

2. Confirm When You Will Receive the Keys

Make sure you know when you can actually access the apartment.

A lease start date does not always tell you what time the office will release the keys or whether paperwork needs to be completed first. Confirm those details directly with the property manager.

Try to avoid scheduling the moving truck to arrive before your access is confirmed. Waiting outside a locked apartment can disrupt the schedule and may add billable time, depending on your moving agreement.

If your key pickup and move are on the same day, tell your movers so they can account for that when planning.

3. Measure Furniture and the Route Into the Apartment

Start with your largest furniture, including couches, sectionals, bed frames, dressers, and dining tables.

Compare those measurements with the space in your apartment, but also check the route from the truck to the room:

  • Building entrances.

  • Stairways and landings.

  • Elevator doors and interiors.

  • Hallway corners.

  • The apartment doorway.

  • Interior bedroom doors.

A piece may fit in the room but be difficult to maneuver through the building.

Send your movers photos and measurements of tight areas before moving day. Let them know if furniture was especially difficult to get into your current house or required disassembly.

4. Decide What Is Coming Before You Pack

An apartment may have fewer closets and less storage than your house, even if the main living spaces feel similar in size.

Think through what will happen to belongings currently stored in your basement, garage, spare bedrooms, and outdoor areas.

Choose what you want to keep, sell, donate, or remove before packing it. Moving unwanted furniture into the apartment first leaves you with another job to handle later.

If you have items that need to be hauled away, our junk removal services can help. Include those items when requesting your quote so removal can be planned along with the move.

5. Make a Plan for Truck Parking

The closest parking space is not always suitable for a moving truck.

Ask the property manager where the truck can park and whether the loading area needs to be reserved. Mention any height restrictions, parking garages, narrow driveways, or limited turning space to your movers.

If there is no nearby loading area, the crew may need to carry belongings farther between the truck and apartment.

That walking distance matters when estimating the job. A ground-floor apartment with a long route from the truck can involve more carrying time than you might expect.

6. Give Your Movers Accurate Access Details

When requesting a quote, describe both the house you are leaving and the apartment you are moving into.

Include:

  • Which floors contain furniture at your house.

  • Your apartment’s floor number.

  • How many flights of stairs are involved.

  • Whether an elevator is available and reserved.

  • The approximate distance from truck parking to the entrance.

  • Any furniture that needs disassembly.

  • Any stops at a storage unit or another address.

These details help determine the crew, equipment, and time needed.

7. Pack and Label for the Apartment’s Layout

Label boxes according to where they belong in the apartment.

If your home office is moving into a guest bedroom, use a label such as “Guest Bedroom — Office Supplies.” That gives the crew clearer direction than labeling everything according to the old house.

Have a basic furniture placement plan ready, too. Knowing where the bed, couch, and larger dressers belong helps avoid moving them around again after boxes fill the rooms.

Keep keys, medications, important documents, chargers, and first-night essentials with you.

If you need help preparing boxes, our packing and unpacking services can cover the whole home or selected rooms.

8. Keep Entrances and Shared Areas Clear

Apartments often have less room to stage furniture and boxes during unloading.

Make space inside your unit before the crew arrives, and avoid leaving belongings in shared hallways or blocking neighbors’ doors. Follow the building’s rules for keeping entrances and common areas accessible.

Keep children and pets away from the carrying route, and arrange for someone to be available to answer questions about furniture placement.

Can Movers Handle Apartment Stairs and Elevators?

Yes, apartment moves can be planned around stairs, elevators, and shared entrances. The important part is telling the moving company what to expect before the crew arrives.

Some furniture may need additional handling or disassembly, and particularly tight access may limit what can be moved through the building. Photos and measurements help identify those issues early.
